1st PUBLIC DISSEMINATION TO CEBU CITY NURSES AND MIDWIVES

On August 23, 2012, HAPI-C had its 1^st-ever Public Dissemination on Hemophilia to Cebu City Government Health Workers at the Cebu City Health Department auditorium.

 

This first of a series of Public Disseminations by HAPI-C is an Overview on Hemophilia. The lecturer is Dr. Lynda Mae Lepatan, M.D., a hematologist with specialized training for hemophilia under the World Federation of Hemophilia (WFH). For this event, the audience consisted of over 120 government nurses and midwives.  As an Overview, the lecture was about general information on hemophilia such as its genetics, symptoms, and treatment.

 

Pre-lecture evaluation sheets were distributed to check if there have been cases that the audience may have previously handled patients with hemophilia or related bleeding disorders. Post-lecture evaluation sheets were also given to rate the lecture and HAPI-C’s event as a whole. HAPI-C volunteers also gave away their “What is Hemohpilia?” pamphlets both in English and vernacular Cebuano versions to the Cebu government nurses and midwives at the end of the dissemination.

DYSS A.M. Radio Broadcasting for Hemophilia Awareness

HAPI-C established connections with DYSS, a radio station under GMA's regional Visayas network (RGMA) during the 1st Cebu NGO Summit on December 06, 2011. HAPI-C was given the opportunity to guest in their radio program to talk about hemophilia. This awareness campaign became somewhat of a national level as the scope of broadcasting is from certain parts of Luzon (northern Philippines), all of the Visayas (central Philippines), and certain parts of Mindanao (southern Philippines). 

A total of 1 hour duration of air time was dedicated to hemophilia awareness and HAPI-C. The program was hosted by Ms. Leslie, regular host of DYSS A.M. radio station. First part was a “text game” (promo conducted by radio program) question: What is your understanding of hemophilia? The listener/participant who texted the best answer gets PhP100.00 worth of top-up credit from the station/radio program. Shortly after was a broadcasting of texters’ answers on what they think hemophilia is. 

 

 

For about 40 minutes there was an interview about hemophilia FAQ’s discussed by HAPI-C volunteers: Ms. Mary Ann Navasquez (President), Mrs. Anges Co (Contact Person), Mr. Reymart Balderas (volunteer), and Mr. Edwardson Co (volunteer). The volunteers answered queries send via text messages from the listeners.

At the end of the program, the text promo winner/best answer was picked by HAPI-C.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN DURING RAMOS CITY DISTRICT DANCE FESTIVAL

During a dance festival at Ramos city district in Cebu city, HAPI-C had a short video presentation on hemophilia. We played this because there were local level politicians present during the event, one of them a congressman. We also gave away our "What Is Hemophilia" pamphlets to the audience.
 After the event we have approached the congressman, however he responded to us that he cannot help us as an organization with medical needs. As a congressman, he can only help individual indigent patients in terms of financial assistance - most specially for hospitalizations and burials. Nonetheless, this was good exposure for hemophilia awareness to the general public, with over 200 people as audience during the event.

MEETING WITH THE CEBU INT'L. LIONS' CLUB

As a local lobbying effort, HAPI-C has a meeting with the Cebu Int'l. Lions Club during their weekly gathering at Baseline restaurant on July 12, 2011. The board members of their organization are some of the doctors and some ofthe senior members of Cebu society's elite.

We had a discussion about what hemophilia is, the statistics of hemophilia in the Philippines, and also about the hemophilia community in Cebu. A 3-minute video presentation on HAPI-C's  activities was also played. During the discussion's end, we approached them for support in our future endeavors. Dr. Rene Obra, the current president of the Cebu Int'l. Lions Club assured that we can count on them when needed.

Radio Broadcasting on DYRF 1215

AM Radio broadcasting corporation DYRF 1215 offered their generous air time for hemophilia awareness to HAPI-C. Initially a one-time deal airing on April 30, 2011, the management decided to make our hemophilia awareness program a regular on their broadcasting schedule. 

HAPI-C has been on air Saturdays at 5:00PM or 5:30PM since then, depending on availability of preceding program.  A.M. radio broadcasting is an extremely powerful media used, as it reaches to those even without televisions in the remote areas of the entire Cebu. It is also very popular among the masses, our "target" group of undiagnosed hemophilia patients.

We are extremely grateful to DYRF 1215 broadcasting corporation for helping us promote hemophilia awareness and education to its listeners.
