HAPI-C Participates in HAPLOS Hemophilia Day

The Hemophilia Association of the Philippines for Love and Service (HAPLOS-Manila) celebrated Hemophilia Day on April 15, 2012. As planned during the last lobbying meeting in February, representatives from the other hemophilia organizations attended. HAPI-C volunteers Jurich Sungcad and Edwardson Co were sent to Manila for the event. Over 80 HAPLOS members attended.

The event started with a motorcade– a convoy of vehicles, decorated with balloons and tarpaulins that would aware the public of the existence of a Hemophilia Group, passed through some major roads in Manila. This was followed by a stop-over at Philippine General Hospital to confer a certificate of appreciation to a doctor for her unswerving support and advocacy to the group. The motorcade ended at Aqua Sphere located in Malate. 

At Aqua Sphere, a 5-minute slideshow of “HAPLOS through the Years” was presented, made by Jarred Formalejo. HAPLOS Vice-President Mrs. Marrieta Charvet gave a speech while the video was being presented.  It showed a glimpse of how HAPLOS started out and eventually became a foundation, and its purpose of existence and the highlight of the presentation that Hemophiliacs could give and contribute to the betterment of the country.

Afterwards, physiatrist Dr. Bee Giok Tan-Sales gave a lecture on the importance of proper exercise particularly for hemophilia patients. An open forum followed and Edwarsdson Co from HAPI-C inquired about the suitability of yoga for hemophilia patients. Dr. Tan-Sales then affirmed that only some of the yoga positions are suitable for the advanced positions in yoga require rigorous strength and flexibility training, that they may put Hemophiliacs into danger. Later, hematologist Dr. Flerida Hernandez also gave a lecture on hemophilia care.

Lunch break followed after the open forum and a friendly chat among the participating people ensued. The venue had a swimming pool, occupied mostly by child patients and their siblings. After lunch, HAPLOS had a special guest performer to sing for the event, the niece of renowned Filipina celebrity Sharon Cuneta. She performed a few numbers and hemophilia day ended afterwards.

The Haemophilia Association of the Philippines, Inc. - Cebu (HAPI-C) participated during the Sinulog Festival on January 15, 2012 by having face-painting service as a fund-raising event. HAPI-C also took this chance for an awareness campaign, handing over our "What Is Hemophilia" pamphlets for customers while waiting (and also to passers-by). We started at 9AM and closed at 9:30PM reaching 100 customers. It was a success, it was fun, and it was our way of being part of the Sinulog festivities. HAPI-C at the 1st Cebu NGO Summit

At the Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center on December 06, 2011, HAPI-C attended the 1st ever general assembly of all the NGO (non-government organizations) from the Cebu province. With Kaabag Sa Subgu as event organizer/coordinator, over 150 representatives from their various foundations, associations, centers, and movements attended.

The first part of the summit was a speech by Sec. Jesse Robredo from the Dept. of Interior and Local Government. As the former mayor of Naga city, he gave a speech about the growth and development a province by urbanization. He also cited the importance of the NGOs' voices in these changes.

Later, Prof. Felisa Etimadi of UP Cebu also gave a speech about her many experiences in working with various NGO's in Cebu. Part of the speech was a lecture on how to work more efficiency as NGOs.

 

 

After the lunch break the NGO's were divided into 3 conference rooms according to each organization's main concerns and interests; Urban and Rural Livability, Sustainable Development, and Human Development.
For the Human Development Interests groups, Edwardson Co from HAPI-C was a speaker for the program and presented about hemophilia in the Philippines and also about HAPI-C.

 

 

An open forum followed.

 

 

HAPI-C was able to establish connections with DYSS A.M. Radio and had offered for guesting in their program on December 11, 2011. An affiliate program also offered local TV broadcasting for hemophilia awareness, scheduled in January 2012.

All the NGOs later returned to the main discussion hall to culminate the entire day's activity.

 

 

CHRISTMAS PARTY 2011

HAPI-C celebrated its annual Christmas Party for the hemophilia community on December 04, 2011 at a new venue, the gymnasium at the Perpetual Succour Hospital.

More than 300 members gathered for the annual Christmas party - hemophilia patients, parents, siblings, and loved ones coming from Cebu and from the other regions in Visayas (central Philippines), and Mindanao (southern Philippines).

 

It started with a Catholic mass presided by Rev. Donald Kill.

After the opening remarks by Sr. Lydia Merino, a short tribute slideshow/speech dedicated to our late president Bobby Chua followed.

 

A video documentary on "Hemophilia and Physical Therapy" in Philippine setting followed. It is a 1-hour case study video on a hemophilia patient with hemophilic arthropathy undergoing physical rehabilitation. The purpose of the video was to educate the hemophilia community that factor replacement (infusion) alone cannot  resolve bleeding episodes esp. chronic bleeds, and that maintaining proper exercise can help reduce the frequency of bleeds.

A Factor Assay Program was offered by the Phil. Hemophilia Foundation from Manila c/o Ms. Lorena Santos – 44 suspected patients were tested. Some of the tested patients were siblings and relatives of diagnosed hemophilia patients, others were previously untested patients from referrals by doctors. Later, Dr. Lynda Mae Lepatan arrived and also volunteered to partake in the Factor Assay program.

After lunch break,

 

 

Several intermissions followed, such as song and dance numbers from hemophilia patients themselves, their siblings, and even some of their friends.

 

 

Play Therapy session followed. HAPI-C volunteers taught children about factor infusion by using stuffed toys as characters playing a dialogue.

 

After that, ice cream and stuffed toys (donations received by Fr. Kill) were given away to children.

 

 

 

Lastly, the Save One Life distribution for the beneficiaries followed. It was the 3rd quarterly distribution for the 2011 funding.
